How can Lix help?

How can I read faster?

Want to speed read like six-time world champion, Anne Jones, who read Harry Potter in 47 minutes and 1 second? While we probably can’t help you read that fast, we do have some tips that might help. Let’s have a look:

Time Your Reading
For all you runners out there—you probably time yourself when you jog 5 km, right? And each time you’re out for a run, you’re most likely trying to beat your previous time. If you want to run faster, you’ve got to train consistently and hard. It’s the same with reading. If your goal is to read faster, you’ll need to first determine your starting pace so you can measure your progress over time.

Head to your, open up one of your digital textbooks and time how long it takes you to read one page. Then repeat this exercise each day for a month and see if your reading speed increases. I bet it will—especially if you experiment with font sizes (use the Zoom In/Out feature in Lix), page viewing options (choose the Single or Double Page option in your sidebar) or honing those skim reading skills (quickly looking for the main ideas in a text).

Eliminate Distractions
Surfing the web, scrolling through Facebook, watching cat videos on YouTube—these things distract you. Stay distraction-free with Exam Mode. Turn it on to take your books offline. This way, you can read faster without being disturbed.

Use Your Screen as Your Guide
Remember when your elementary school teacher told you to use your finger to guide your reading? When reading digital books, let your screen replace the finger! While this might seem elementary (bad pun intended), using the screen to guide your reading will keep your eyes moving forward. For some students, this means reading the entire page before scrolling to the next one. For others, like me, who prefer reading in smaller chunks, scrolling after reading 2-3 paragraphs is much more efficient. Finding out what works best for you is a surefire way to speed up your reading and fast!

Pre-Read Again and Again
Most of your textbooks have intros, definitions, key takeaways and summaries. When possible, skim over the most crucial parts of the book—like highlighted text, bolded terms and section headings. Skimming helps you to quickly find important information in articles and texts, which helps you to use your reading time wisely. Mark these places with the Lix Highlighting or Notes tools so you can easily find them later on. It’s gonna save you a lot of time!

Keep Timing Yourself
Once you’ve practiced your techniques for a month—don’t stop! Try timing yourself once a week. Keep track of your improvements in a spreadsheet or journal and make adjustments to your training when necessary.

How can I take better notes?

That’s an easy one. Label in Lix to quickly filter your notes. Here's how it works. Let’s say you’ve assigned the word “URGENT” to a note. When you search notes marked “URGENT,” all notes with that label will show up in the results.

Using your own labels with Lix Notes is a popular organizational method for students, so check it out to see if it’s right for you! Learn more...

How can I prepare for my exams?

Step 1: Consolidate Your Notes
OK, so you’ve been consistently taking notes all semester, covering all the right things. But have you remembered to consolidate your notes on a weekly basis? This can help set the stage for understanding the concepts you need when exam time rolls around!

Set yourself up for a good grade and condense all of your notes down to 1 (yes, only 1) summary note (you can do this right in the Lix app). If you are able to get all the information covered over a 4-8 week period into one note, it’s a good bet that the information is nicely stored in your memory, allowing for quick access during your exam.

Step 2: Build Up a Collection of Practice Questions
One of the biggest problems we face when studying for exams is that we don’t prepare for what’s actually going to be on them! But there’s an easy solution. Anticipate what you’ll be asked on your exam and build up a collection of practice questions you suspect to see.

Pull problems from old exams and organize your study efforts around solving these questions. And you can even save all these old exams in your Lix app. The newest Lix feature, PDFtron, allows you to upload PDFs, audio and video files and URLs, making it easier than ever to stay organized on your big day.

One more thing—use your detective skills. If your professor drops hints about what might show up on the exam or places specific emphasis on a particular topic, make sure to note it. This way, you can build a diverse set of problems you expect to see.

Step 3: Rehearse for Your Exam
I’m pretty sure Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t just head into a football match without first knowing the opposing team’s strategy. He’s analyzing game film, reading scouting reports and practicing in a “game-like” environment so he’ll be ready on gameday. It’s really no different when preparing for exams.

There’s no better way to set yourself up for success than to rehearse for your exam. This makes studying much more targeted than simply reading through your textbooks and notes and only solving practice questions at the end of each chapter.

So, here’s what you’ll need to do:

Simulate the exam conditions as much as possible in order to get a realistic assessment of how you might perform during the actual exam. For example, if you’re headed to an oral exam and know you only have 10 minutes to present your material, time yourself. If you know your supervisor and censor will be in the exam room, grab two friends who are willing to listen to your presentation and ask you some of the questions you prepared from Step 2.

Once you’ve finished your presentation and Q&A session, have your friends review your performance and give you a grade. You want an honest assessment of your current level so you’ll know what things you need to improve. Address each of the issues in your performance and go back and correct your mistakes. Repeat the process until you feel you’re 100% ready!

Step 4: Active Recall
So you’ve spent time building up your collection of practice questions. Now it’s time to solve the problems from scratch. This means problem solution only—no notes, no reviewing the questions or answers beforehand—just getting down to business. Active recall is your secret weapon to deeply entrenching the problem solving steps you’ll need during your exam. By the time you’ve finished this step, you’ll have covered the big gaps in your knowledge and improved on your weak areas.

How can I organize my notes?

Write Your Notes Digitally
With Lix, you can write individualized notes directly into each of your digital books. This feature automatically highlights the text you’ve selected and lets you add a note to that highlight. Then, you can check all the notes and highlights you’ve made on the column to the right of the screen to get a clear overview of what’s most relevant to you.

Color Code Your Notes
You can even personalize your note-taking strategy, adding different colors to represent multiple categories. If, for example, you’re really struggling with a topic, you can highlight your notes in red. Or, maybe you’re familiar with a topic, but need to revisit it later—color-coordinate to match your level of understanding. The way you color your notes is totally up to you.

Search Through All Your Notes
In the Lix app, all you need to do is digitally search a keyword from a note or highlight and you’re taken there automatically. You can also digitally search any reference or topic in your books. This frees up tons of time, so you can actually have a life outside of your studies!

Use Keyword Reminders
For those arduous terms, place a keyword reminder in each note to represent the difficulty level (e.g., very hard, hard, medium, low). Then, you’ll be able to quickly choose which level to focus on while you study. By creating a customized system, you can optimize your work.

Keep Your Notes Sorted
Lix provides a note menu, which gathers all your notes together, depending on how you sort them. For example, you can give your notes their own headline to make it easier to remember topics and concepts. This headline can be used to gather several notes in one place. So, when you search for a keyword or phrase, like “URGENT,” all notes with the headline “URGENT” will appear. You can even share these notes with your study group directly from the app. Pretty cool, right?

How can I save time with Search?

If you’re anything like me (hopefully not), you have the memory of a goldfish. Remembering what I previously read has always been a struggle for me. Couple that with not being able to find a specific reference, and I am literally doomed. And, for those courses that require multiple books, finding similar topics from all sources can become a huge problem. Luckily, Lix allows you to search through all your books, notes and highlights simultaneously to find all relevant themes and topics, and then group them together—a feature not available from any other digital study app.

Here’s how it works: simply type in the keyword or phrase you’re looking for directly into the Lix search bar, which is located on your bookshelf. This will prompt search results from all your books, notes and highlights—giving you a full overview of which books the keyword or phrase appears in.
